The Salt Road
The road out of town ran beside the water for eleven kilometres, and for most of my childhood I believed it ended there. Past the silos, past the last of the boat sheds, the bitumen simply gave up and became sand.
My father drove it every morning before light. I would hear the ute cough twice in the yard, then catch, then fade along the shore until there was only the sound of the tide again.
It was years before I understood that he was not driving anywhere. He was simply driving away, and coming back, and that the coming back was the part that cost him.
Mum never asked where he went. She left the porch light on, and in the morning she switched it off.
